Thought for Easter 2009
By Su Brakewell.
Spring is officially here. The clocks have ‘sprung’ forward,
the Spring Equinox (when the length of the day and night are equal)
has come and gone – the days are getting longer, lambs are in the field,
daffodils and other spring flowers are blooming and the trees have little
fat leaf buds.
The Spring Equinox is often celebrated as the first day of Spring,
renewal of the Earth – the sign of new life. Good Friday is traditionally
the day when farmers and ‘allotmenters’ plant their potatoes – the growing season
has started in earnest!
But new life is not without perils. The unpredictable weather
‘April showers’ that can resemble monsoons can spoil the pretty colours
and crush the plants.
If they survive the weather there’s the sport of lopping off the flowers.
Regardless, the plants continue to live and will be ready to greet the world again next year.
As we approach Easter the significance of ‘new life’ should not be lost on us.
Jesus was prepared to give up his life in order that we have the opportunity of ‘new life’,
the new life we can have with him.
As we move forward into the season of new life/growth we should be
asking ourselves how do we look for:
New life as a church? - read last month’s newsletter (clue: NCD)
New life as individuals?
And ...
How can we make sure that we are not crushed by the pressures of the world?
Let these words spring (!) new life into your heart:
O let the Son of God enfold you with his Spirit and his love,
let him fill your heart and satisfy your soul.
O let him have the things that hold you, and his Spirit like a dove
will descend upon your life and make you whole.
Jesus, O Jesus, come and fill your lambs.
Jesus, O Jesus, come and fill your lambs.
